  Inhabiting a musical world that seems equally informed by rootsy rock ‘n’ roll, earnest pop-punk, and the clean, tight, math-rock guitar interplay of post-Dischord indie pop, the band ties all those influences into a debut LP that surprises with how well they work together. It helps that the Tough Shits have a knack for witty lyrics and familiar pop hooks, crafting what amounts to no-nonsense, everyman music with heart and brains.

  The Philly band's eponymous debut—out now on Burger Records—is not only one of 2012's best albums, but it's aslo one of the year's most fun and enjoyable, in large part, because of its lyrics...the songs come off as incredibly refreshing because of how prominent, carefully crafted, and clear the lyrics are.

  I've been to plenty of their shows and loved the raw rock'n'roll energy they pumped out, now there is the physical testament to that sound...overall the record sounds great...In short the album is 12 hook filled, well crafted garage punk tunes that demand a second play. This is the perfect thing to listen to now that the weather is getting nicer, it's a summer party record without a doubt.

• In case You couldn't tell from the name Philadelphia's Tough Shits have a healthy appreciation for the immature and the purile - just like one of their more obvious heroes, The Replacements. Fortunately, 'Birds' off their forthcoming deput album is more 'Let it Be' than '...Trash' suggesting they'll be flying high for quite some time.
